About the Wherry Lines

The Wherry Lines connect the fine city of Norwich with the seaside towns of Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft

The name of the lines pays tribute to the famous Broads trading wherries which played an important historical role in the transport of good and people before road and rail transport became widespread.

The route was initially opened from Norwich to Great Yarmouth in 1844 by the Norwich and Yarmouth Railway, running via Reedham.

In 1847, Sir Samuel Morton Peto added the line from Reedham to Lowestoft, as part of the Norfolk Railway. In 1882, the northern route running from Norwich to Great Yarmouth via Acle was added by the Great Eastern Railway.

Community rail is about local communities taking pride in their railway station and its surroundings. Since 2007, the Wherry Lines Community Rail Partnership has been supporting and encouraging use of the railway between Norwich, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft.

The partnership is funded by Greater Anglia with support from Suffolk County Council, Great Yarmouth Borough Council, Waveney District Council, South Norfolk Council and the Association of Community Rail Partnerships.
